SHUTTLES

Our goal is to find the simplest, most cost-effective way to get your gear and people to the river, and back to civilization. PRO's shuttle fleet consists of air conditioned, 14-passenger vans and four-ton trucks equipped with lift gates.

No matter the size of your expedition, we can transport it. Please contact us to discuss the specifics of your shuttle--we can help you sort out the best possible combination..

SHUTTLES OF PRIVATE VEHICLES
If your shuttle plans involve relocating your private vehicles, we recommend River Runner's Shuttle Service, owned and operated by Norman Montgomery. RRSS is reliable, resourceful, and well known in the region.  Norm and his family can be contacted at (928) 564-2391. Norm's web site is www.rrshuttleservice.com, and there you will find prices and printable reservation forms. If Norm shuttles your car you must make car storage arrangements with someone other than Route 66, keep reading for options.

CAR STORAGE
Several hotels in Flagstaff will allow you to leave vehicles there if you are staying a night at each end of the trip. While these locations are not "secure", they not obvious targets and we have had good luck so far. Our favorites options for this purpose are Day's Inn at 1000 W Route 66 (928-774-5221) and Comfort Inn at 2355 S Beulah (928-774-2225).

If you have your vehicle shuttled to Peach Springs by River Runner's Shuttle Service, it will be stored with Ralph Goldenstein in Truckston, 7 miles from Peach Springs.  Ralph shuttles cars to the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs on the day of your takeout, or to the water at Diamond Creek. Please contact Ralph for his rates. Only rugged vehicles are suitable for this road. Contact Ralph at home (928) 769-2610. Car storage is not available at the Hualapai compound in Peach Springs unless you are using both a Hualapai bus and truck shuttle to Peach Springs (see next section).

Some folks also leave cars at Lee's Ferry. The sign in the long term lot says "14 day limit" but the park does not enforce this limit. As with any vehicle left anywhere for weeks at a time, minimize the valuables you leave there.

HUALAPAI SHUTTLE OPTIONS
The Hualapai Tribe runs trucks and busses on the road from Diamond to Peach Springs.  Tribal shuttle prices quadrupled in 2005. Please contact PRO for an evaluation of your best strategy before you contact Norm or the Tribe.  If you use PRO for your takeout shuttle we will be happy to cover the Tribal road fees. For Hualapai bus/truck shuttle arrangements, call the Hualapai River Runners at (928) 769-2219.

2008 GRAND CANYON SHUTTLE PRICES

Put-ins 5-ton truck van
Flagstaff to Lees Ferry $570 $620

Take-Outs
Diamond Creek to Flagstaff $770 $700
Diamond Creek to Lees Ferry $1190 $1100

GAS SURCHARGE
PRO's 2008 shuttle rates are based on an estimated gas cost of $3/gallon. PRO reserves the right to charge a gas surcharge should the gas rates increase significantly beyond this mark. PRO will avoid imposing surcharges if fuel rates don't increase, so keep your fingers crossed!

HUALAPAI FEES
After the Permitholder sends the permit application to Grand Canyon National Park (deadline 90 days prior to launch), the Tribe will send him/her a bill for the takeout. In 2008 the tribe is charging $55 plus 7% tax per person, vehicle and driver. That makes 20 fees for a full trip of 16 river runners with a truck and van pickup. We expect the fees to increase by $5/head for 2009. If PRO is doing your takeout shuttle, you do not need to respond to the tribe's early bill. At the Diamond Creek takeout, please accompany the PRO driver meet with the tribal ranger. You want to assure that the correct number of river runners are represented on the tribal permit. PRO will charge you for the number of fees that the tribe writes on the permit (and bills us for), even if it is inaccurate!. Additional cars and drivers shuttled to the water will incur additional tribal fees.

LOAD LIMITS
Truck loads greater than six row rigs must have prior approval.

FLASH FLOODS ARE REAL
Diamond and Peach Springs Creeks flood annually due to torrential downpours upstream from the town of Peach Springs. When the Diamond Creek Road washes out, the Hualapai Tribal Road Crew works with heavy equipment to rebuild a vehicular route into the canyon. Usually the tribe gets the road open again within 24 hours, but after an especially large flood the road can be closed for several days. Our customers and boats can be trapped in the canyon by the road closure. We'll get you out as soon as we can! We may have to go back later to get the boats. If this happens to you, expect to pay PRO's cost on the second (boat pickup) shuttle--it's a risk you take. The "road" is often rough and unstable, and travel is slow.  Monsoon rain activity can cause several road closures in one monsoon season (July-September).  Downpours typically occur in the afternoon.

TAKEOUT TIMES
Morning takeouts are standard for Grand Canyon trips at all times of year. The Hualapai Tribe mandates that there be no boats on the Diamond Creek boat ramp between 7:00 and 10:00am between April 1 and October 31.   PRO recommends a 6:30am pickup in the summertime to avoid heat, crowding and the risk of flash floods. This is not as early as it sounds, since Airzona is not on daylight savings time. In spring and fall a 11:00am pickup is standard.  During the summer, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the tribal River Runners fill the entire "ramp" area with their motor rigs which they use to run commercial Diamond Down trips.  Please call us to consult about the best possible time of day to take your group out.  Thanks.

PEARCE FERRY IS STILL CLOSED
And it has been closed
since May 2001 due to low levels on Lake Mead. It is not known when it will reopen.  Two riffles have formed near Pearce Ferry and the current continues well past Pearce.  The next access point on Lake Mead is South Cove, 17 miles past Pearce.  We recommend taking out at Diamond Creek.

If your trip takes out at Diamond during
MONSOON SEASON
(July to September) please read the
Diamond Creek Information. You will be glad you did.
